Last week I started my 6 week internship at Whistle PR. Having recently finished university, I consider myself very lucky to have this opportunity. Although my degree was in digital marketing, Whistle PR was kind enough to offer me the chance to learn more about the PR and communications industry.
On my first day I was welcomed by the digital department who helped me settle in. A computer and mobile phone were handed to me with a company email and account details to various software and programmes the agency uses. This made me feel like I was part of the team already and showcased how professional and well organised the agency is. An induction and useful documents about clients, work processes and industry vocabulary were all set up by my work station. I feel positive about how the internship is structured and how much I am going to learn.
Throughout the first week I had meetings with the digital and PR team and I was impressed about how open they were to structure the internship based on my preferences and experience. The team were also very understanding as they slowly increased my tasks which helped me settle in easily and understand how these can be completed in the best way possible. Although some tasks were easier to complete than others thanks to my digital marketing background, the team were helpful and always ready to provide support. I was pleased with being assigned different tasks with short- and long-term deadlines at the same time. This made it easier to manage and prioritise my tasks but also made me think about how well the programme has been planned.
So far I have learned about social media monitoring, competitor research, blog writing, SEO basics, how to use SEMrush and Roxhill media database. I am sure I will learn many more skills and get more experience across both digital and PR departments.
Some colleagues bring their dogs to the office which is great. They provide the perfect distraction to switch off from your screen for a moment to pet them
I am very excited about what I will learn in the next few weeks.
